Eyelash extensions are considered a godsend for those who’d like to have natural, fuller looking eyelashes without having to spend minutes applying coat after coat of mascara or wrestling with an eyelash curler. Eyelash extensions, which vary in length from 6mm to 17mm, come in three types: synthetic, silk and mink. These extensions are applied one at a time using specially-prepared glue.
Here are 10 tips to maintain your eyelash extensions so they last longer between touch-ups.
10 tips to make your Eyelash Extensions Last Longer
1. Stay away from Water for at least 24 Hours
The glue used to attach the extensions requires time to set: so, as far as you can, avoid splashing your face or eyes with water for at least 24 hours. Water can cause the glue to disintegrate, leading to your extensions falling off. If you have to shower, take care to keep your face directly away from the stream of water.
2. Sleep on Your Back
Do you love sleeping on your stomach with your face smooshed into the pillow? It can damage your extensions or cause them to fall off, as well. Sleep on your back as much as you can, and consciously refrain from sleeping on your stomach or on your side.
3. Avoid Waterproof Mascara
Well, technically, you can avoid mascara altogether; but if you must use mascara, stay away from waterproof mascara. They tend to clump your lashes and are, therefore, harder to remove, and all that tugging and pulling can damage them and shorten their lifespan.
4. Use Sealant instead of Mascara
Instead of mascara, use a coat of eyelash sealant to add gloss and depth to your lashes, while preserving the bonding holding your lashes in place. Sealants also contain hyaluronic serum that keeps your eyelashes conditioned.
5. Be Careful while Using Oil-Based Creams
If you use night-creams or moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated and improve your complexion, take care to avoid the area around your eyes. Oil can cause the bonds in the glue to break, causing your eyelashes to fall off.
6. Take Care while Removing Makeup
While removing your eye makeup like eyeliner and eyeshadow, gently wipe at your eyelids with a wet towelette or cleaning wipe. Avoid using dry cotton pads or puffs; they can weaken your eyelash sealant and mess the lashes up: the cotton fibers can stick to your eyelashes, damaging them.
7. Always Use Oil-Free Makeup Remover
While washing your eyes, try to use a mild, low-alkaline soap and an oil-free makeup remover. As we’ve said before, oil and eyelash extensions don’t go together. Gently dab the remover around your eyes and remove your makeup with a damp cotton swab or wipe.
8. Mind the Curl
While choosing your extensions, always opt for extensions that match the natural curl of your eyelashes. If your eyelashes are straight, and your extensions are curlier, they won’t last long. Your lash artist will know which type of extension is best for your eye shape.
9. Comb Them Regularly
To prevent your eyelashes from losing shape and becoming clumped, use a clean mascara spoolie wand and roll it carefully over your lashes. Do this once in the morning and again in the night. This will keep your lashes defined and perfectly curled.
10. Don’t Play with Them
When your eyelashes grow naturally, they’ll naturally push your extensions out. So, avoid touching, yanking or playing with your extensions; you can end up pulling out your natural lashes, as well, and it could make the whole set-up look wonky and unnatural.
Since your eyelashes fall out, your extensions will need touch-ups and fill-ins every now and then, at the salon. For a regular, even look, be regular with your fill-in sessions.
Eyelash extensions are a great alternative to tedious eye makeup routines. However, they require proper maintenance and care if you want to keep them looking pristine for longer.
